Young people asked to help advise on policing and community safety

Young people between 13 and 21 years old are being invited to help advise the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner on policing and community safety.

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), is seeking motivated young people from across West Yorkshire to join his Youth Advisory Group.

Members of the group have the opportunity to have a more active say, to express their views and opinions on local policing matters, communication campaigns, strategies and much more.

The group provides insights into policing and victim care as well as regular prospects to take part in new initiatives, enhance relationships between young people, the PCC and the Police. It also looks great on your CV!

What does it include?

  • Meeting 4 times per year – usually on a Saturday morning, via Skype currently due to the pandemic, but normally across venues in West Yorkshire.
  • Sharing their personal knowledge, opinions and experience of community issues within the group.
  • Provide advice to us to help the PCC improve policing and make sure people are safer and feel safer.
  • Take part in workshops and learn about key policing topics included in the Police and Crime Plan.

Mark Burns-Williamson, said: “The Youth Advisory Group (YAG) are very active and help to give me a unique perspective on how young people view policing and community safety more generally, and what issues directly affect them which in turn influences my decision making and plans

“To date they have helped me with my Police and Crime Plan, important consultations and advised on numerous policies and campaigns.

“In these uncertain times it is all the more important our young people have a voice. Their contribution is really valued and used in ways that can change what we do and deliver within our communities to young people and many others.”
