New Year Message (31 Dec 2012)

The year ahead sees huge challenges, but also opportunities for policing and crime prevention across West Yorkshire. Government funding cuts to the police force, local government and partner organisations concerned with policing and community safety means the level of resources available are diminished further. With these cuts however come challenges. How do we in West Yorkshire ensure that our policing and crime prevention is right for us in our communities?
The opportunities presented are for new ways of providing policing and crime prevention that best meet the needs of all people across West Yorkshire. To achieve this, stakeholder relationships need to be built and strengthened, partnerships need to be widened and deepened, and most importantly, everyone across West Yorkshire needs to be more engaged in the decisions that affect them, their families and their communities.
Many understandably disengaged in 2012 with the election for a Police and Crime Commissioner, but having been elected I ask you to engage with important decisions that have to be taken which will directly affect your lives and the funding to your communities in 2013/14. The Budget and Police and Crime Plan have to be set within the next couple of months and I fundamentally believe that whatever the governance structure, it is the needs and concerns of people in their communities that should be heard and understood and set the agenda for action.
I have launched a consultation 'Listening to You' with a questionnaire that I hope will provide you with the framework to set out your priorities, but also your needs and concerns for policing and crime prevention. The survey can be found at, paper copies can be sent to you if you telephone 01924 294000.  If you have difficulty accessing, understanding or would like to contact me direct please contact my office on the number above.
Please be in touch and I look forward to hearing from you, but I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for you and your family in the New Year.
