£100,000 to support victims of hate crime as PCC launches one off extraordinary grant round (25 Nov 2015)

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has launched a one off £100,000 extraordinary grant for organisations to tackle hate crime.

The one off grant round is being funded from the Victim Support Services Fund held by the Police and Crime Commissioner and is for organisations or individuals to support victims of hate crime.

There are no upper or lower limits on grant amounts that individuals or organisations can bid for but successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the outcome in the Police and Crime Plan that all victims and witnesses are supported across West Yorkshire.

A 'hate crime' is a criminal offence that is believed to have been motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person, based on disability, gender identity, race, religion or faith, or sexual orientation.

There were 3,497 hate related calls for service to West Yorkshire Police in the twelve months to the end of April 2015. Hate crime can take many forms, such as assault, harassment or abuse, but all incidents share one thing in common - victims are targeted for simply being who they are.

Applications for the grant need to be completed and returned to the Hate Crime Fund Coordinator by 12.00 noon on Wednesday 16 December.

More information on the grant, how to apply and the application form can be found at /get-involved/extraordinary-hate-crime-grant.aspx

Mark Burns-Williamson said "Being targeted because of who you are is a horrible experience that no-one should have to suffer through.

"I will continue to do everything I can to support all victims of hate crime and I am pleased to be able to offer this money to organisations and individuals who will make a real difference at the local and county wide level.

"I recently re-launched a joint campaign with West Yorkshire Police which aims to raise awareness of hate crime and how to report it. To find out more about the campaign visit /get-involved/campaigns/hate-crime.aspx"

Anyone with information about a hate incident is asked to report it either by calling 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency, online at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/hatecrime.
