West Yorkshire Police Weapons Surrender - update (26 Jan 2016)

Weaponssurrender 3_0More than 60 weapons, including guns and knives, have been surrendered so far in West Yorkshire during the county-wide weapons surrender.

The campaign, backed by stabbing victim Vincent Uzomah, was launched on January 20 January and runs until this Saturday (30 January).

West Yorkshire Police launched the initiative with the aim of stopping weapons getting into the wrong hands. It gives members of the public a safe place to dispose of firearms, ammunition, knives and other weapons they may have.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Angela Williams of West Yorkshire Police, said:

"I am very pleased that we have had 60 weapons surrendered. These are weapons that can now never be used for illegal means.

"I would also remind people that there are still five days until the surrender finishes on 30 January so there is still time for people to surrender their weapons and I would encourage people to do so.

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "I have fully supported this weapons surrender and am pleased we have had 60 weapons handed in so far. I would take this opportunity to urge people to take advantage of this surrender to hand in weapons they have that may be illegal and dangerous in the wrong hands as they still have five days to do so.

"This surrender gives individuals a perfect opportunity to ensure the weapons are disposed of safely and ensures we are doing all we can to keep our communities safe and preventing potential crimes of the future."
