PCC statement on HMICFRS PEEL Legitimacy Inspection (12 Dec 2017)

Mark Burns Williamson said: "I am pleased to note that West Yorkshire Police have been rated Good for how they treat the people they serve with fairness and respect including their own officers and staff, and for ensuring the workforce behaves ethically and lawfully.

"HMICFRS have commented on how West Yorkshire Police has a good strategic approach to Stop and Search and use of force with an effective training package, scrutiny and governance of the use of these powers which include regular accountability meetings I have with the Chief Constable around the use of Stop and Search.

"It is reassuring that HMICFRS also note that West Yorkshire Police has made notable improvements in the way it seeks feedback and challenge from the workforce and I applaud the work done around the Positive Action recruitment campaign to ensure WYP are recruiting officers from a range of diverse backgrounds to more reflect the communities they serve.

"HMICFRS stated that they were impressed by the examples and standards set by the chief officer team who are clearly setting standards for the workforce as strong role models, also finding a well-established culture of integrity and openness among senior leaders.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff and officers, including the senior leadership team led by Chief Constable Dee Collins, for their continued efforts and hard work being done around the Code of Ethics vision, purpose and values, also noted in the report.

"In really challenging times this is a very positive report and a great reflection on the work being done internally and externally to ensure our communities are safer and feel safer which is the overall vision set out in the Police and Crime Plan."
