PCC statement ahead of VE Day and the Bank Holiday Weekend

7th May 2020

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), said: “I hope that you, your families, friends and colleagues are all keeping well and staying safe.

“Tomorrow marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day and hope that you will all be able to rightly remember and celebrate it in a respectful and appropriate way, whilst we all continue to abide by the social distancing and public health guidance from the NHS and Government.

“We will await the Government’s announcement on Sunday with regards to their plans on an exit strategy for the lockdown restrictions. Whilst there is a lot of speculation as to what will be announced I would echo West Yorkshire Police’s call to celebrate safely and continue to follow the national advice.

“I will be watching the announcement with interest, especially on the policing element of the strategy to ensure it will work for our communities, our officers and staff, who all have been doing such a sterling job in these extremely challenging circumstances in overwhelmingly following the guidance.

“Best wishes and stay safe.”
